One of the Top Designer Katherines Collection
Unique Holiday Designer: Wayne Kleski
This Christmas season, Wayne M. Kleski and his design team were asked to help select a collection of unique high end dolls. His collection, called Katherine's Collection, includes grandly-sized figures with intricate details, rich fabrics, and colourful accents.
"Katherine's collection products are unique and special because we take the time to ensure that each piece is made with multiple materials. Each piece is reviewed over and over again to be sure that our team has created the best piece we can."
He says these pieces are definitely conversation-starters at a holiday gathering or during an intimate family get-together. "They will draw family and friends into your home and wish them wonderful memories when they depart, My favourite pieces are those dolls that can fill a room with conversation and laughter."
Kleski spent his free time as a child with his Italian grandmother. An immigrant who lived a simple life, she could make anything that she put her mind to; she was a phenomenal cook, made delicious wine, and was even able to cobble shoes. Kleski says his grandmother always took the time to help him create gifts for special occasions.
"She influenced me to appreciate the beauty of handmade items and gave me the opportunity to experience making something from nothing," he says. "I did not grow up thinking about becoming a designer, nor even entering a creative profession. However, I always spent my free time making things and working on crafts. I grew to love that creative outlet."
Kleski started working as a designer in 1969 after graduating from high school. He worked as a floral designer in Akron, Ohio, and spent some time designing for an import company in the area. He also mentored under a home accessories designer, and soon started to develop his own style.
"My design is stimulated and inspired by the past. Museums and flea markets are my library," Kleis says. "I am very colour-driven I love to mix colour and textures. I have always enjoyed combining period costumes with different characters. I am one of the few, lucky people in this world that has been able to develop a successful career based on what I truly love to do, creating items of visual interest for myself and others."
When we asked what his inspiration was, Kleski said, "I always claim that it is my poor eyesight! Sometimes I will see something from afar and get excited because I think it is something sensational. When I get closer, I find that what I thought I saw doesn't even exist and it is the basis for a new design or a new creation for myself."
Kleski says his ideas come from things that have inspired him, including streets of his favourite cities, reminiscing with old friends, or a beautiful photograph full of colour.
"When I was a child, one of my favourite holiday memories was lying on the floor almost completely under the Christmas tree and looking up at the branches filled with bright colored bubble lights and silver icicles. My thoughts and imagination would just run free. That visual stimulation, combined with things that I see afar, can spark an idea that will be basis for a new collection or a new item."
After he thinks of an idea, Kleski starts developing a story for a specific figure. He shares his brainstorming with his design team, and invites their help on solidifying that story. "Each of my dolls has a story: a past, present and future. For example: If our woodland Santa has just awoken from a winter slumber to see spring fairies at work to bring a new breath of spring to the forest, the collection would be a mix of colours and items that would help describe that transition of seasons."
While some of his designs may take years to perfect, others are complete after one night. Once he’s fully-drafted an idea, it takes Kleski about three months to produce doll prototypes, and an additional six months for production.
"Our mission is to create tomorrow's heirlooms today using our memories of the past," he says. "One of the most important things to me is detail. I am challenged by and rewarded by creating a design and using many different and new techniques. The details, often hidden in one of my designs, are really for my personal satisfaction."
Once the costume is drawn and fabrics are plugged, the seamstress brings the figure to life. Lastly, Kleis personally reviews every cut, seam, and trimming to ensure that his design has been accurately translated. "If you look at my dolls, you will see a passion and love in each and every one. Each one-of-a-kind piece has a special sparkle in their eye from being hand-painted. Each has a closeness to my heart from the amount of time I spend working to make it the best I can."
The final step is to send the figure to the factory to be produced. Kleski spends about six months out of the year visiting his factories to produce dolls as close to the exact reproductions of original pieces as possible. "I am very much a hands-on designer. I personally visit the local fabric factories to select the fabrics and trims and work to teach the production staff each of the new sewing techniques and design styles."
Kleski says the advantage of having his own a family-owned business is that if a creation does not meet his high expectations, it isn’t made. "My collectors only deserve the best my imagination can offer, and I work every day to ensure that is exactly what they get."
As for general holiday decorating, Kleis recommends sticking with accents that you love. "Decorate your home everyday, and especially at the holidays, with the things that make you feel comfortable. Trends are fun to follow, but always remember to keep your heirloom pieces close at hand."
